The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Politics in Mexico have evolved through the years, so has democracy. This does not mean that it is less or more complex than before; it is a process intended to fulfill the need of society. In order to understand The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of our Political System, it is essential that we go through the last century and analyze our current democratic situation.

The Good: Broad Access

Nowadays, every Mexican citizen has the right to vote regardless his or her educational background, social status, genre, or skin color. Nevertheless, when democracy was first applied after the Mexican Revolution, certain groups of people were not allowed to get involved in any political matter. Their rights were violated, it is clear, but back then there was a difference between rich and poor; dark skinned, clear skinned and white skinned; and women and men.

The Bad: Competition

A dynamic rivalry among political parties it is important because people learn about their candidates. Mexico is not the exception: each political party is provided with an amount of money that is used for their campaigns. When the opposition among them leads to political, social or economic instability, society is forced to face problems that should not exist; almost every candidate forgets that they work for their country.

The Ugly: Abstinence

Mexico’s complicated democratic development has not finished yet and now a new phenomenon occurs: voting is no longer an attractive activity for a large number of people. They do not trust the system anymore because they are convinced that some elections are fraud; despite this, the government invites them to participate.

Mexico’s Political past has a strong influence on its present, therefore, it is vital that we learn and understand the significance of history. The more someone knows about his or her country, the more responsible decisions he or she will be taking. Remember you can always choose to be The Good, the Bad, or the Ugly, you can make the difference.
